Further Information
Encyclopaedia Londinensis.
This was an ambitious and all encompassing work that included many subjects
such as natural history, architecture, maps, etc.
The natural history part is
rarely found coloured.
Further Information
The Nouvelle Iconographie des Camellias was published in Ghent, Belgium starting in 1854 for 13 years.
It is probably the rarest and greatest camellia catalogue
of all, produced for the pioneer camellia nursery run by Ambroise Verschaffelt of the Nursery Verschaffelt family.
It was an exciting time in Europe, when the race to discover new plants and bring new cultivars to a never satiated public was in full swing. Prominent botanists collaborated on many of the seminal works of the day including Verschaffelt's Nouvelle Iconographie des Camellias, now a very rare work.
The lavishly illustrated plates, colour lithographs, contain a wonderful array of superb camellia blossoms. The colour plates are very bright with velvety petals and vibrant colouring enhanced by gum arabic. The drawings are by Bernard Leon, printed on stone by G. Severeyns.
Each print measures approximately 24 x 17 cms
(
6 1/2 by 9 1/2inches),
The condition of these prints is very good, with the paper a warm brown colour the images are very strong.
All our prints are original antique prints, and these prints are about 150 years old. They are a rare find indeed for the lover of these beautiful flowers.
Further Information
L'Illustration Horticole was one of the finest botanical periodicals of the latter half of the 19th Century, and was first published in Ghent, Belgium in 1854. Its purpose was to educate people about the fascinating plants being gathered from around the world and hopefully persuade them to buy them from the associated plant nurseries.
The driving forces behind the early editions were Charles Lemaire, a professor of botany, Ambroise Verschaffelt of the Nursery Verschaffelt and the Linden family who were renowned Belgian horticulturists.
The prints were lavishly illustrated and lithographed by some of the best botanical artists and lithographers of the day, such as Goosens, De Pannemaeker and Stroobant. Many are enhanced by delicate shellac finishing.
Condition
is excellent. The
colours are still fresh and bright. The paper is slightly dusty due to age.
The fold is visable through the centre of the page.
